Biodiversity, a wealth to be safeguarded

The Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park, due to its particular geographical location between the Aquitaine Basin and the Massif Central, is home to a very varied flora and fauna.

A natural heritage of great diversity, explained by a contrasting geography

Biodiversity represents both the biological wealth constituted by all living organisms, but also the relationships they can have with each other and with the environments in which they live. The Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park draws its great natural wealth from its situation of contact between contrasting geographical factors: geological, climatic, hydrographic. This meeting of varied geographical influences explains the coexistence of faunal and floristic processions with Atlantic affinities (the Bluebell, the Ciliated Heather or the Mountain Cinquefoil), continental (Northern Doradilla, the Wild Blueberry or the Yellow-bellied Ringer) , and southern (the Ocellated Lizard, the Southern Tree Frog, the Genette, etc.).

The good ecological status of habitats and populations is necessary to halt the decline of biodiversity, but also to increase their capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change.

Preserving the biodiversity of Périgord-Limousin

The territory of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park covers a certain number of sites identified as ecologically remarkable. These sites are well-known centers of biodiversity. But the natural wealth of the park extends beyond and has not been fully inventoried.

The park's missions defined in the charter are based in part on safeguarding and promoting sites with high ecological value, but also on improving knowledge of the park's natural heritage.

Safeguard, promote and network a mosaic of remarkable sites

The preserved nature of the biodiversity of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park is expressed, among other things, by a multitude of remarkable sites, hosting a high density of species and environments requiring particular attention because they are vulnerable on European, national or regional scales. They are often small in size, but numerous and well represented throughout the territory. The park adds to knowledge about these environments, supports owners towards better management practices and participates in the running of this network of sites.

Improve knowledge of biodiversity and preserve the level of fauna and flora wealth of the territory

The particularity of a “mosaic” landscape of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park where forest areas, meadows, traditional hamlets, orchards are closely intertwined, and the originality of a situation of contact between contrasting geographical factors, explain the presence of diverse fauna and flora. The park's mission is to strengthen naturalist knowledge of the territory while ensuring an adaptation of practices to preserve ecological balances, the functioning of ecosystems and interconnections.

Actions to improve knowledge of natural heritage

The Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park carries out programs over several years, from diagnosis to experimentation, to better understand and preserve the natural heritage of the territory.
