Rochechouart CM1/CM2 discover the agricultural world

To start the year off in style, the CM1/CM2 class at Rochechouart primary school enjoyed an activity on Tuesday, January 14, on the theme of "My peasant neighbor." This first morning of discussion should be followed by a second and then a visit to a market gardener established in the town!

Raising awareness among children…

Funded by the Park and hosted by La Soupape Sauvage, this intervention aimed to familiarize young people with the agricultural world, which is so important in our region.

For two hours, the students were able to discover the farming profession and the different types of agricultural production, using a variety of educational materials. The discussions also provided an opportunity to learn about the origins of our food and to promote the importance of local and seasonal eating . The children were very attentive and actively participated: " Here, corn is used for silage, " explained Lucas. " A flower is like a restaurant for bees, " marveled Alice.

They are all eagerly awaiting June, when they plan to visit Cédric's farm , "L'oignon fait la force" (Onion Makes Strength), a producer of organic vegetables and berries located just a stone's throw from their school. Beforehand, the students will have prepared for the outing during a second classroom session. This will give them an excellent understanding of the vegetable life cycle, the difference between raw and processed produce, and the profession of market gardener.

A unique feature of this program is that, in addition to the three activities with students, the Park funds a preparation session for the host farmers prior to the visit to their farms. The goal of this half-day session is to equip them with the tools to best welcome young visitors to their farms. Piloted last year, this approach was a resounding success and led to the development of partnerships between activity leaders and farmers, enabling the organization of new outings outside the framework of the school programs coordinated by the Park. A prime example of the positive impact of the Park's work on the region!

Alongside the Year 1/2 classes from Rochechouart, a total of 51 primary school classes are benefiting this year from activities coordinated and funded by the Park as part of its Explorers program . Among them, 10 have chosen to work on "My Neighbor the Farmer," raising awareness of this theme among nearly 140 students in the towns of Bussière-Galant, Brantôme en Périgord, Rochechouart, and Saint Junien. The other classes will explore a variety of topics related to the natural resources of the Périgord-Limousin region: insects, water, crafts, and more.
