Spring without mowers - Let's preserve the biodiversity of our gardens!
The Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park is joining forces with the Departmental Joint Syndicate for Waste of Dordogne (SMD3), the Departmental Union for the Elimination of Household and Similar Waste of Haute-Vienne (SYDED 87), and the Joint Union Collection and Treatment of Household Waste from Nontron for a spring without mowers.
Since September 2021, the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park has coordinated a European LIFE project aimed at preserving and promoting the biodiversity of wild bees in the five regional natural parks of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. As part of this initiative, the Park is developing awareness-raising activities among professionals and residents to encourage a change in practices in favor of wild pollinators.
Starting this year, the Park, SYDED 87 and SMD3 are calling on citizens to let their grass grow throughout the spring, from March 21 to June 21, to let nature flourish.
An unmown lawn offers many benefits to biodiversity:
- Wildflowers such as daisies, dandelions and clovers thrive, adding pops of color to the garden and providing a prime food source for pollinating insects such as wild bees and butterflies.
- Plants grow freely, creating refuges for biodiversity and providing insects, birds and other soil dwellers with a place to live.
But also to gardeners:
- The vegetable garden benefits from pollination, while mowing residue at the end of the season makes ideal mulch.
- Less mowing also means less CO2 emissions due to the use of thermal equipment and trips to the recycling center.
To go further, numerous tips are also available for gardeners wishing to create a zero-waste garden in order to promote garden plants directly on site.
