Hierce Castle

Description

The Château de La Hierce, located almost in the heart of the town of Brantôme, is a pleasure residence built during the 1520s and 1530s under the reign of Francis I. This building is constructed on a limestone cliff riddled with caves that serve as its foundation. It is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in the Périgord region. Erected on a site occupied for thousands of years, as evidenced by the troglodytic dwellings adjacent to the monument and the prehistoric engravings adorning one of the caves, La Hierce is the only example in the Périgord of a château with exclusively Renaissance architecture, devoid of any influence from the medieval or Gothic styles. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1892, it houses, in its eight rooms open to the public, one of the finest collections of furniture in the Périgord, as well as numerous other collections.
