Description
The church, originally under the name of Saint Martial, was founded at the latest in the Carolingian era, when Flavignac gave his name to the Flaviniacensis vicaria, an administrative district of the county of Limoges. Rebuilt, enlarged and modified many times, the current building, while integrating some older elements, dates mainly from the end of the Middle Ages. It was at this time that it became a church of the Assumption of the Virgin, Saint Martial remaining a secondary term. The Pérusse family, established since the beginning of the 14th century in the Château des Cars, in the parish of Flavignac, contributed greatly to this reconstruction as evidenced by the coat of arms present on certain keystones.
The church has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1926.
