Bushel of tithes

Description

The tithe bushel is a circular carved rock that served as a unit of measurement for collecting taxes, known at the time as the tithe. The tithe was a medieval tax, adopted by the Church in the 12th century. It was a payment, in money or in kind, levied on agricultural income. This tax was intended to fund religious services, including the upkeep of the clergy and places of worship. According to legend, it was the "devil's bushel," both because its origin is unknown and because of the stone's distinctive shape.
