Description
The religious origins of the city date back to the 6th century. Aredius, priest and high Merovingian dignitary, transformed an important Gallo-Roman villa into a monastery. Upon his death, the saint's growing fame and cult led to the construction of a building housing his tomb. In the second half of the 12th century and until the end of the 13th century, canons built a collegiate church on the site of the 12th century Romanesque church of which only the current bell tower-porch remains.
