Description
The hermit Amand settled on the banks of Vienna, near a ford, to live in prayer. He was joined in 500 by Junien and both helped the travelers cross the ford. When he died, Amand was buried near his hermitage. It was in the XNUMXth century that his tomb was found, and a church was built on the tomb. In the XNUMXth century, the Récollet brothers took possession of the place, which had become dilapidated. After work, the abbey consisted of a church, a refectory and monastic cells. During the Revolution, the entire property was sold to Mr. Bernard, miller, who sold it to Mr. Périgord, sub-prefect of Rochechouart. The latter demolished the buildings and with the materials, retaining walls were built, giving the abbey its fortified appearance. Today, only the north transept remains, and gardens have been landscaped.
