Description
A granite region, the Châtaigneraie abounds in stones of all kinds with curious shapes. Here, in Bussière-Galant, at the place called "Pierre-Pointue" or "Pierre-Folle", this stone nicknamed "the wolf's cradle" stands there, at the top of a hill. We can see the imprint of a foot that was supposedly left by a Gaul in the past, hence the name "Pied de Gaulois". It is said that every year, it turns on itself, which also earned it the name "Pierre-Folle".
Another legend tells of an unmarried mother who was rejected by her family. She found refuge with her child in the hollow of this stone, but the cold and hunger took the child. The mother became mad, hence the name "Mad Woman's Stone". It is said that sometimes, in the winter wind, we can still hear her complaints.
The site is accessible via the “Sentier des sources de la Dronne” or by parking at the place called “Grange”.
