Sustainable forest management

What is sustainable forest management?

According to the Forestry Law of 2001, “Sustainable management of forests guarantees their biological diversity, their productivity, their capacity for regeneration, their vitality and their capacity to satisfy, currently and for the future, the relevant economic, ecological and social functions, at local, national and international levels, without causing harm to other ecosystems. »

Ultimately, it is about managing your forest so that it meets the needs of the present (living environment, wood material, nature) while preserving future needs.

Forest management therefore takes place over time; it must not stop at the simple harvesting stage. It must take into account many aspects, among others:

  • the soil, the topography (the forest station) and the climate,
  • the state, type and composition of afforestation,
  • the accessibility of the plot
  • the most appropriate interventions according to the owners' objectives and local issues.

To ensure good sustainable management, it is important to seek assistance from competent professionals. As an owner, you can favor professionals involved in forest certification, such as PEFC: these professionals are committed to respecting complete specifications in their interventions, which guarantees you the quality of the work carried out: link to the PEFC France website .

How can I make my forest management sustainable?

A few questions can help guide your actions: Is my forest healthy? Is it valued (wood, leisure)? Does it contribute to biodiversity? Will my interventions make it possible to ensure all of this over time, to allow my afforestation to renew itself?

What tools?

Forest management certification , forest work and wood processing is a way for owners to guarantee the quality of work in their woods. The PEFC and FSC logos are to be looked for!

In public forest , owners are required to respect the principles of sustainable management, according to the Regional Forestry Guidelines, and the planning document for each public forest, drawn up by the ONF, takes into account all the issues to propose sustainable management of the forest heritage in the medium term.

In private forest , the regional silvicultural management plan frames sustainable forest management recommendations for the region, it can be downloaded from the CRPF website. To materialize their commitment, owners can sign sustainable management documents recognized by law.
