Improved pond management

More than 4 bodies of water have been created for leisure purposes in Périgord-Limousin since the 000s. The density can reach 1970 ponds per square kilometer, which is a record in France.

Prevent the development of cyanobacteria and improve pond management

The density of ponds in Périgord-Limousin presents risks for watercourses: interruption of ecological continuity and sediment transit when it is located on a watercourse with accumulation of sediments rich in nutrients, favoring the development of cyanobacteria.

This situation can compromise the drinking water supply and swimming leisure activities…

The park implements several actions promoting the ecological continuity of our rivers, by acting directly on ponds located on them, primarily in the Doue watershed.

Pond emptying

The park and its partners, the fishing federation and the National Office for Water and Aquatic Environments (ONEMA) support owners keen to empty their ponds in good conditions, in order to avoid downstream pollution. of the watercourse. In addition, the presence of invasive species on certain bodies of water, notably the Bullfrog, requires great caution when emptying.

Acquisition of ponds, erasure and restoration of wetlands

Certain ponds represent an important challenge for regaining water quality. The park supports communities in the acquisition of certain works, either amicably or by pre-emption. The objective is to erase these structures and restore them in wetlands which require appropriate management.

To individuals, the park also explains the benefits of erasure, but this remains difficult to accept even if this action is 100% funded. Agreements can be put in place.

Drying of ponds with vegetation management

Drying up a pond allows phosphorus to be blocked in the sediment and vegetation to grow at the bottom of the pond, which assimilates and stores phosphorus in the growth phase. Then, mowing and manual export of this vegetation from the body of water allows the phosphorus to be exported.

Reduction of impact of ponds

Reducing impacts involves bringing bodies of water up to standard: the monks thus discharge the bottom waters which are colder and less loaded with cyanobacteria. The diversion, for its part, makes it possible to disconnect the body of water from the watercourse and thus promote the restoration of sediment transit. The park recommends and supports owners in this upgrading.
