The forest, for sustainable management

The forest covers more than 43% of the surface of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park, this rich and varied environment adorns the local landscape. From chestnut thickets to oak forests, including recent coniferous plantations and mixed woodlands, this forest is a mosaic of colors and aspects.

The forest, a plural and important resource for the territorial economy

If it shapes the local landscapes, the forest is also home to numerous species, fauna and flora, which make it a remarkable natural environment, especially since trees and water are often mixed in Périgord-Limousin. Although these forests seem immutable, they are in fact subject, like other semi-natural and natural environments, to the collapse of biodiversity and the consequences of climate change.

This forest, 99% private, is the site of an important economic activity carried out by companies (VSEs or SMEs) which promote local wood in all its forms: artistic crafts, construction wood, parquet, carpentry, fencing and stake, firewood, exploitation... The structuring of these local forestry sectors into short circuits contributes to the development of the territory's resources.

It is a challenge for the park to work to develop forest resources with a view to sustainable management.

DEVELOP LOCAL FORESTRY SECTORS TAKING INTO ACCOUNT ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

Through its charter, the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park has set itself the objective of providing lasting operational responses to stakeholders in the forestry sector, in the face of socio-economic developments and climate change (adaptation of varieties, species, modes of production and management to new conditions).

The park's missions in this area are based on the organization of short supply chains, the promotion of local production, and support towards better forest management, for a sustainable and resilient sector in the face of future changes.

Support integrated management and development of the forest

The objective of the park is to work with all stakeholders in the timber sector to perpetuate a quality resource and improve its valorization while respecting the multifunctionality of forest areas. To do this, it supports forest owners and stakeholders in the forestry sector towards better management of the environment: adaptation of plantations, awareness of the heritage and functional value of the forest, implementation of more reasoned management methods, etc. In this context , it conducts studies (LPO, SEL, etc.), experiments with its partners (CRPF, ONF, etc.), and promotes initiatives and good practices put in place by local stakeholders or other territories.

MAKE THE VALEURS PARC BRAND A LEVER TO IDENTIFY AND ORGANIZE SHORT SECTORS IN THE TERRITORY

Ensure the development and recognition of the territory through the application of Park Values brand on local products is one of the park's objectives. The park thus supports producers in collective reflection to define a marketing and communication strategy for these products.

PROMOTING LOCAL PRODUCTIONS WITH POTENTIAL

The park aims to support and amplify efforts to promote local production. To do this, it supports and supports the development of shared tools for the transformation of forestry products and collective actions, by boosting local networks of project leaders.

RAISING PUBLIC AWARENESS, INFORMING AND PROMOTING EXCHANGES BETWEEN DIFFERENT ACTORS

This forest and this wood industry are part of a territory: the exploitation uses the tracks and the roads, the felling has an effect on the landscape, the companies hire locally, the furniture is found in local tourist sites... The Park supports therefore also the actions of exchanges between elected officials, foresters, naturalist actors, local population. It also supports awareness raising among different audiences (schools, general public, owners, etc.) about forestry issues. Finally, it conducts experiments to create spaces for dialogue, around development projects, forest management projects, etc.

Actions for a sustainable sector

The park works with different forestry stakeholders and at different stages of the sector, from management to product promotion, to develop a dynamic and sustainable sector.
